This time we're looking at the beautiful Northumbrian Coastal route to Holy Island and the historic drive alongside Hadrian's Wall. Now that we’re beginning to see some summer weather in the North East of England it’s time to take your new car out for a country drive. We’re lucky to have some beautiful countryside in the North East that is often taken for granted. Over the next two months we’d like to share with you some of our favourite roads and journeys in the North East.
When will the A1 bypass roadworks be finished?
Since August 2014 Highways England have been carrying out extensive work on the A1 Western Bypass from the Coal House junction the Metro Centre. The improvements involve adding an extra lane to both the North and South bound carriageways and also some work is being carried out to improve the A184 junction, which is one of the main routes into Gateshead from the A1.
Free Parking after 5pm in Newcastle!
Newcastle NE1, the Business Improvement District for Newcastle City Centre, have been organising some big changes around the Newcastle City Centre over the past few years. One of their biggest projects has been the Alive after Five initiative which encouraged businesses to stay open later, benefiting those that work nine to five. Since beginning in 2010 the scheme has introduced permanent late night opening in shops around Newcastle with shops staying open till 8pm on weekdays and 7pm on Saturdays!
How to Handle Potholes
The Problem at Hand
It is concerning how many drivers come into contact with potholes and end up with unnecessary amounts of damage to their cars. Potholes are caused from frozen water expanding underneath the pavement and most commonly affect the axles and suspension of a vehicle. They cost motorists and authorities vast amounts of money every year, which also sets back the already underfunded road maintenance kitty. In fact, the kitty is so underfunded that it would take at least 12 years to catch up with all of the maintenance work in England if authorities were provided with the adequate amount of funding.
